The Zebulon Record Unemployment Rises Zebulon has not been excluded from the current wave of unem ployment that has hit the nation. Not in a number of years have there been so many unemployed persons in the city and this area, said one official, who wanted to remain anonymous. Some of the top executives ih the town have said times are get ting bad when persons don’t have enough food to eat and enough clothes to wear. Mrs. Ann Jones, assistant Wake County case worker who serves Zebulon and its outlying areas, said applications for welfare aid are flooding her. • Mrs. Jones, here every Friday, said men out number women seek ing help. She believes that when farming season gets into full swing, the list will dwindle. Baseball Schedule Principal John J. Hicks has re leased Wakelon’s 1958 baseball schedule. There are twelve games sched uled for this season, and six of them are to be played on Wake lon’s diamond. This is the schedule: March 25, Knightdale March 28, Apex April 1, Rolesville* April 8, Open April 11, Millbrook* April 15, Wake Forest April 18, Wendell* April 22, Knightdale* April 25, Rolesville April 29, Apex* May 2, Open May 6, Millbrook May 9, Wake Forest* May 13, Wendell Starred games are home games. SNUFF LEADS TO JAIL You have heard it said a box of snuff will get you anything. It will also get you in jail. On Monday, Police Officer Wil lie B. Hopkins opened the steel doors of Zebulon jail and gently ushered the nicely dressed Negro woman in. “Does you have to do this, Mr. Hopkins,” she said in a quavering voice, her tongue deadened with alcohol until her speech was al most unintelligible. “Does you have to put me in jail? I ain’t done nothing, Mr. Hopkins.” She hadn’t done anything but order a box of snuff from a mer chant in town and then had refused to pay. In the jail she sat heavily down on the lower bunk, and felt in her pocket as if she were searching for the box of snuff. There was no snuff. There was only the coolness, the afternoon gloom and the silence of the jail cubicle. Red Cross To Hold Nursing Course The Wake County Chapter of the American Red Cross is spon soring a home nursing course be ginning Tuesday, April 1, and con tinuing until April 22. The free course of care of the sick and injured will be held twice weekly on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The place of instruction is the Chapter house on 301 North Blount Street, Raleigh. Miss Virginia Wells, Rex Hos pital registered nurse, will be the instructor. Insurance Executive And Family to Move To Kinston Soon Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Holt and daughters will become residents of Kinston as soon as they find hous ing accommodations. Holt, who for the past two years has been associated with the North Carolina State Insurance Depart ment as life actuary, will become office manager of Insurance Com pany of North Carolina in Kinston on April 16. This company has been in existence about three and one-half years. Holt was graduated from Wake Forest College with a bachelor of science degree. He later received a master of education degree from the University of North Carolina FVom 1951 to 1955, he headed the mathematics and athletic depart ments of Wakelon High School. The thirty-one-year-old native of Elizabethtown is married to the former Betty Holliday of Wake Forest. They have two children, Donna, 4, and Lynn, 1. Mr. and Mrs. Holt have en deared themselves to the residents of Zebulon and expressed regret in their having to leave. Zebulon Girl on1 Shaw Honor Roll The Honor Roll for the first semester, just released at Shaw University by the registrar, lists a Zebulon resident, Mary Taylor. Miss Taylor is a sophomore at the University. Miss Gladys Johnson, a fresh man from Wendell, also made the honor roll. Recent Bride Honored At Bridal Shower Mrs. Richard Billings, Jr., recent bride of Zebulon, was entertained by her mother, Mrs. Linwood Fow ler, with a bridal shower Friday night, March 21. After party games, the guests were invited into the dining room for refreshments. The table was covered with a white cutwork lin en cloth and centered with an all white arrangement of carnations, gypsophilia and mums, in which a miniature bride stood holding an umbrella and was flanked with burning white tapers. Refreshments were fruit punch, individual cakes, chicken salad sandwiches and nuts. Mrs. Richard Billings, Sr. of Durham, mother-in-iaw of the bride, presided at the punch bowl. Thirty-four guests attended the social.
